You know the old saying, "One man's trash is another man's treasure."  Usually you find treasures at second hand stores, yard sales, or beside a dumpster.  Last month we found what we thought was trash in our own front room.

A couple years ago Lisa and Lance graciously gave us a beautiful entertainment center that they no longer needed.  We have loved it!  There is so much great storage, and it's a well made piece of furniture.

Last month, James decided to upgrade our family to a flat screen TV- which has been a lot of fun.  Last Christmas we were given a bluray player and we've never really gotten to experience the bluray fantasticness (yes, I know that's not a word) because we didn't have "the right TV."  I just have to say that I really enjoyed watching our Beauty and the Beast bluray (which we also got for Christmas last year, it's one of the most beautiful animated movies if you ask me) and can't wait for the new movie that will be under our tree this Christmas!

But, I digress...the new TV did not fit in the entertainment center.

We were sad to face the fact that it needed to go.  We really loved those drawers for our DVDs.  However, go it did not.  We tried selling it.  We tried giving it away.  We called family, friends, ward members.  Natalie did want it, but we didn't know how to get it all the way down the Cedar City.  Sadly, these entertainment centers are becoming a thing of the past.  Our landfills are going to be full of these things!  (I directed Natalie to KSL Classifieds because there are LOADS of centers just like this one.)

So, it sat in our living room...

...collecting dust and other items that get sucked into my theory "the law of flat surfaces."  Ask me about it sometime- I'll be happy to explain.

We stared at it a lot.  Wondering what to do with it.

I suggested that maybe we just use it for firewood this winter.  At least we could use it somehow rather than sending it to the dump.  Don't worry I really was just kidding...maybe.

Then, James suggested that maybe we modify it.

And that thought smoldered in our heads until one day we decided to just go for it.  Why not?  No one wanted it.  If we messed it up too much, we really could just use it for fire wood.

So, I cleared out the shelving and took the door off.  That left only one piece of wood to cut out- one simple cut.  And James took care of it while I was gone to a Relief Society Meeting.  This is what it looked like when I got home.  He's just smoothing out some of the rough edges.

I mean, it wasn't perfect- there are a few scratches and unfinished spots.  You mostly see saw dust in this picture.  But, I figured it saved us AT LEAST $200, which is what we were looking at spending for just a simple stand for the new TV.  That made it all worth it.

Then, with a little effort and strength, we moved the newly remodeled entertainment center down stairs to it's new happy home and gave the new TV a new happy home.   All you can see is that one little strip of unfinished  wood just above the open shelving.

We were more than pleased with the results!

All this makes me think I need to post about the finished basement....more to come!  The blog is never complete.

Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without. Good job you two.
