White Pine Lake

We had a wonderful time on our backpacking trip with Shad and Heidi. Many of you know Shad, he and James have been friends since 6th grade. He married Heidi Holman a couple years ago and they just recently bought a house in Clearfield only a couple of miles from us. We had been planning on this trip for several months. There is a lake about 15 miles west of Bear Lake in Utah called Tony Grove Lake. 4 miles north of Tony Grove Lake is White Pine Lake which is where we backpacked into.

We took this picture on the way in. The wildflower fields were beautiful (see our last post.)

This is White Pine Lake. It is surrounded on 3 sides by pretty sheer mountain walls. There are also two majestic peaks, one on the south and one on the north. This is Mount Magog to the south...
And this is Mount Gog to the north. Interesting names that I'm sure come from the Bible. I have no idea of the origins.

We hiked the 4 miles to White Pine Lake, set up camp and then took off on an adventure. This is a cave that is in the cliffs above White Pine Lake. Shad had been up there before and convinced us that we could do it, which we did. We hiked up to the cave and then somehow made it all the way up on top of the cliffs. don't worry, we got pictures.

Here is Heidi working her way up.

Here is Shad and Ann about half way up.

There was a very steep part of the trail that was easier traversed by working your way up through a very small gap in the rocks. It was a little clostrofobic, but not terrible.

And of course, the view from the top was incredible. We camped in one of those clumps of trees on the far side of the lake. The trail came in from the flat side of the lake that you can see here.

We eventually made our way back down just in time to have a small fire and some dinner before it got dark. We forgot to take pictures of the campsite. We hit the sack and were sleeping well until about 1:30 when a herd of cows wandered through our campsite. Some wilderness huh? I guess it is open range area up there. They didn't do any damage besides MOOOING us awake. It starting raining around 3:00 and didn't let up until 9:00. There were even a few snow flakes mixed in with the rain. We stayed mostly dry though and started our hike out shortly after 9. It was muddy but otherwise beautiful. The clouds were low and trying to push their way through the mountains. Made for some beautiful shots like this one:

That's about it. Thanks Shad and Heidi for a wonderful trip. We love you guys! Let's do it again next year!
